Hans Wegner the father of Danish furniture design said it very clearly furniture should not have a side to it, meaning if you peak under the table or under the chair it should look as good as it looks at the top.
This is the difference between good quality furniture and the otherwise cheaper than the material furniture you can buy at the big box stores.
